The largest mosque in the UAE, Sheikh Zayed grand mosque can accommodate over 40,000 visitors. The main prayer hall can hold more than 7,000 worshippers, and there are two small prayer halls with a capacity of 1,500 each. In order to construct the mosque more than 100,000 tones of Greek and Macedonian marble were used.

International artisan team:

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Arabic in its appearance, it took collaboration with construction companies around the world. The artisans from India, Pakistan, China, United Kingdom, Egypt, Turkey and Germany contributed their skill. Salini Impregilo, an Italian engineer took around 3000 workers from 38 companies. With New Zealand wool, 1300 Iranian craftsmen hand knotted this carpet. Due to its weight, it had to be disassembled, flown in on two planes, then re-stitched upon arrival.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque provides free guided tours for visitors in English or Arabic. The mosque is accessible to visitors from Saturday to Thursday, from 09:00 in the morning to 10:00 at night, and on Fridays, it is open from 16:30 until 22:00. To maintain the mosque’s decorum, women are given Abayas, and men are provided with long trousers. 

UAE’s first president conceived the mosque

The Grand Mosque is the name of the structure dedicated to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the UAE. It was under his guidance that the project was conceived, and the mosque was constructed as a tribute to his legacy. Sheikh Zayed chose the location for the mosque himself, situated at the entrance of Abu Dhabi island between Musaffah Bridge and Maqta Bridge, and gave detailed architectural directions on the project. The mosque is renowned for its grand and majestic design, and it serves as a place of worship for many. Additionally, the late president had expressed his desire for it to be his final resting place, and his body now rests in the courtyard of the mosque.
